Mary is an 81 year old mother of seven and has many grandchildren. She lives at The Western Home in Cedar Falls and was born in Waterloo where she lived all her life. She began hand painting tea towels 25 years ago as a hobby while caring for her parents. The towels are given in bundles of seven for each day of the week and at this point she has made between 300-400 sets. Although the towels could be kept as a keepsake, they can also be used and hold up well with washing. These whimsical works of art stem from the time-honored tradition of embroidery. Using an embroidery stamp design, Mary has approached the art in a different way using fabric paint. This creates a unique rendering of the pattern, rich in color. When she has the opportunity to sell her work, she enjoys giving the profits to family members who might need a little extra cash. Money made from selling also helps buy the materials she needs to create these beautiful towels.
