Virginia Visker came to Iowa City in 1976 and became an integral part of the counterculture here, especially as it relates to “outsider artists”, a term applied to people who have had no professional training in art and create art from their soul—not always pretty, but with extraordinary grace and talent.
Virginia is known for her avid interest in unifying people in the community to demystify the outsider artist, proudly admitting to be among this unique population. Her work has a deep energy which she describes as an outpouring of her inner demons. Afflicted with paranoid schizophrenia, some of her work is the expression of nightmares that awaken her in the middle of the night—which is also her optimum time for doing her work. She also explains that her mental illness enhances her art using the formula: Contort, Control, Confuse, Compose. Virginia is inspired by nature, enjoys her closest friends and her godchildren as well as being involved with getting her art out there and helping others to do so. She offers both originals and prints of her work for sale.
